How to Travel Like a Club Member: Upgrades, Perks and Access Most People Never Know Exist

There is a version of travel that most people do not know exists. It is not necessarily more expensive than the version they are used to. It is simply better organised, and it benefits from a level of access that the standard booking process never provides.

The upgrade is the most obvious example. Hotels hold back a proportion of their best rooms for guests they consider high-value, whether through loyalty status, direct booking or membership of a programme they respect. The guest who books through a third-party aggregator at the cheapest available rate is, from the hotel's perspective, the guest who gets what they paid for. The member who books through a channel the hotel recognises is a different conversation entirely.

The difference between a good trip and an exceptional one is often a phone call that most travellers do not know to make.

Room upgrades on arrival are just the beginning. Priority access to sold-out experiences, restaurant reservations at places notably not taking bookings,
late checkout without negotiation, early check-in as standard rather than as a favour. These are not trivial things. They change the quality of a trip in ways that are difficult to put a price on, though travel insiders will tell you the implied value runs into hundreds of pounds per stay.

The same principle applies to transport. Business class upgrades on certain airlines remain available to loyalty programme members on a confirmed-seat basis for a fraction of the published fare. The knowledge of when and how to request them is the asset. Most people do not ask because they assume the answer is no.

Concierge access is perhaps the most underused benefit of membership-based travel. A good concierge does not simply make reservations. They know which table at which restaurant actually has the good view. They know that the Uffizi in Florence is meaningfully less crowded at opening time on a Tuesday. They know who to call to get two people into a sold-out wine tasting in Burgundy.
