In Your 40s, 50s and Beyond: What Actually Changes and What to Do About It

There is an enormous amount of money to be made from the anxiety that surrounds ageing skin, and a proportionally large amount of misinformation generated in service of that money. The global anti-ageing skincare market was valued at approximately sixty billion US dollars in 2023, according to Grand View Research, and is projected to grow significantly through the rest of the decade. A meaningful proportion of that market is built on ingredients with limited clinical evidence and claims that would not survive regulatory scrutiny in a pharmaceutical context.

What actually happens to skin from the forties onwards is more interesting than the marketing suggests, and the interventions that genuinely work are more straightforward than the product ranges imply. Understanding the biology removes the anxiety and makes the buying decisions considerably easier.

The three interventions with the most clinical evidence behind them are SPF, retinoids and niacinamide. Everything else is supporting cast.

In your forties, the primary changes are a reduction in collagen production, which began gradually in your late twenties but becomes more visible now, and a slowing of cellular turnover. Slower turnover means dead skin cells sit on the surface longer, producing dullness and uneven texture.
The effective fix for this is regular exfoliation. Glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid derived from sugar cane, used two to three times a week in a concentration of between five and ten percent, is one of the most well-researched exfoliating ingredients available. It improves skin texture, reduces the appearance of fine lines, and supports the effect of other active ingredients used alongside it.

Menopause, which typically occurs in the late forties to early fifties in the UK, produces a more significant skin shift. Oestrogen regulates skin hydration, elasticity, collagen production, and wound healing. Its decline, which happens relatively rapidly in the perimenopause and early post-menopause period, produces increased dryness, greater sensitivity, and a loss of structural support, particularly in the lower face and around the jaw. The products that address this most effectively are those containing ceramides, which restore the skin barrier; hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture into the skin; and peptides, which signal collagen production. Hormone replacement therapy, for those who choose it, also has measurable effects on skin quality that topical products cannot fully replicate, a finding supported by a 2022 review published in the journal Menopause.

The three interventions with the strongest clinical evidence behind them are SPF, retinoids, and niacinamide. SPF prevents further photo damage, which is the primary driver of visible skin ageing. Retinoids, which include retinol available over the counter and prescription-strength tretinoin, increase collagen production and accelerate cellular turnover. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, reduces redness, strengthens the skin barrier, and improves the appearance of pores and uneven skin tone. All three are available at multiple price points. The product with the elaborate packaging is rarely meaningfully more effective than the pharmacy own-brand alternative containing the same active ingredient at the same concentration.
The honest truth about skincare in your fifties and beyond is that consistency matters more than product sophistication. Using three well-chosen products every day produces better results than rotating through an expensive ten-step routine that you abandon after a fortnight. The skin responds to regularity.
