Sober Curious or Just Sober-Sober? The Best Non-Alcoholic Drinks Worth Actually Ordering

For most of the past century, not drinking alcohol in a social setting required either a medical excuse or a willingness to be handed a tap water and left to get on with it. The options were poor. The atmosphere around those options was poorer still. There was a persistent sense that not drinking was something to be explained and slightly apologised for.

The situation in 2026 is genuinely different, and the change has been faster and more complete than almost anyone predicted.

The best non-alcoholic drinks are not trying to be alcoholic drinks. They are trying to be something else entirely.

Seedlip launched in 2015 as a distilled non-alcoholic spirit and was widely regarded as a novelty. What it actually was is a starting pistol. The category that followed has produced products of real quality and genuine complexity. Fluère, a smoked agave spirit with no alcohol. Three Spirit, which uses adaptogens and botanicals to produce something
with actual physiological effect. Lyre's, which has reverse-engineered most of the major spirits categories in non-alcoholic form, including a bourbon, a dry London spirit and an amaretto that is genuinely convincing.

On the wine side, the progress has been slower but it's arriving. The challenge with non-alcoholic wine is that alcohol is part of what gives wine its texture and weight. Most early attempts produced something thin and vaguely grape-adjacent. Brands like Leitz Eins-Zwei-Zero from Germany and Torres Natureo from Spain have solved enough of the technical problem to produce wines that belong on a proper table.

In bars, the mocktail has been quietly rebranded as a zero-proof cocktail and elevated accordingly. The best cocktail bars in London, Manchester and Edinburgh now treat the non-alcoholic section of the menu with the same attention given to the rest of it. Seasonal ingredients, complex preparation, beautiful glassware. The only thing missing is the thing many people have decided they are better off without.

The best non-alcoholic drinks are not trying to be alcoholic drinks. They are trying to be something else entirely, and the successful ones have found their own territory. Interesting, complex, adult and worth ordering on their own terms.

Whether you are six months sober, doing a dry January that turned into a dry year, or simply driving, you should not have to order sparkling water and pretend you are fine with it. You are not fine with it. Better options exist!
The non-alcoholic drinks category is one of the most interesting places in food and drink right now, and it is moving fast. Try something new this week. You might find you prefer the morning after considerably more than you expected.
