The Artists Shaping the Sound of 2026, and the Albums That Prove It

Music in 2026 has a streaming problem and a discovery problem and, in several genres, a genuinely interesting set of artists making things that would have been impossible to predict five years ago. The festival circuit reflects some of this but not all of it. The headlines go to legacy acts and stadium-filling pop stars, which is fine but leaves a considerable amount of interesting work sitting below the radar of anyone who does not follow music closely.

The album that people in the music industry have been discussing most seriously this year is Charli XCX's Brat follow-up, which doubles down on the hyperactive hyperpop of its predecessor while finding more space for melancholy. It is not an easy listen and it is not meant to be.

The most interesting music is rarely the loudest. It is the work that rewards the second and third listen.

In British rap, CASISDEAD, who has been making music since the early 2010s under various guises, released an album this year that has been greeted by people who follow the genre as a definitive statement. The production is extraordinary. The lyrics reward close reading. It will not feature in any mainstream chart discussion.

For listeners who are less interested in genre categories and more interested in sound, the Arooj Aftab and Vijay Iyer collaboration is the most beautiful record released this year by some distance. Pakistani classical singing and jazz piano in a form that does not feel like either tradition compromising for the other. It is the kind of music that makes you sit in your car for an extra ten minutes at the end of a journey.
