A Taste of Italy in the Heart of Prestwich: Inside L'Aquila

Tucked away on Bury Old Road in Prestwich, L'Aquila is the kind of restaurant that makes you feel like you've stumbled upon a brilliant secret. Warm, welcoming and thoroughly Italian in spirit, it has quietly established itself as one of Greater Manchester's most beloved dining destinations since opening its doors in May 2021. I sat down with Kevin, one of the driving forces behind the restaurant, to find out what makes L'Aquila so special.

From the moment Kevin begins talking about the restaurant, one thing is immediately clear: this is not simply a business. It is a passion project rooted in a deep love of Italian food, family, and hospitality. "Food is how we express our love," Kevin says, echoing a sentiment that feels woven into every aspect of how L'Aquila operates. That philosophy shapes everything from the suppliers they choose to the way each guest is greeted at the door.
The restaurant prides itself on sourcing seasonal, high-quality ingredients from small, artisan producers wherever possible. The menu is a love letter to regional Italian cooking, featuring freshly made pasta and risotto alongside beautifully prepared fish dishes and heartier meat options. Standout favourites among regulars include the steak al pepe and the meatball starter dishes that have earned rave reviews and repeat visits in equal measure. The kitchen doesn't cut corners, and diners can taste the difference.

Drinks are given just as much thought as the food. L'Aquila offers an ever-changing selection of natural, organic and biodynamic wines sourced from small Italian producers, complemented by local craft beers and sustainable soft drinks and spirits. It's a considered, conscientious approach that reflects the restaurant's broader commitment to quality and sustainability.

But speak to anyone who has dined at L'Aquila, and it is the atmosphere and the people that come up again and again. Kevin is quick to credit his team, emphasising that every member of staff plays a vital role in making guests feel genuinely at home. "We all work together to make customers feel welcome," he explains, and it shows. Reviewers consistently describe the staff as warm, attentive and willing to go the extra mile not just professionally polished, but authentically kind.

The space itself is intimate cosy rather than cramped with a décor and ambience that sets the tone for a relaxed, unhurried evening. It is the sort of place where families celebrate milestones, couples enjoy quiet dinners, and friends linger long after the plates have been cleared.
Since opening, L'Aquila has built a fiercely loyal following in Prestwich and beyond, with many guests returning time and again. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 5pm, and from 3pm at weekends, with Monday the only day of rest.

For Kevin and the team, the goal has always been simple: to bring a genuine taste of Italy to the north of England, one beautifully cooked dish at a time. On the evidence of L'Aquila, they are succeeding magnificently.
