La Dolce Vita Comes to Prestwich

There is a particular kind of shop that does not really want to be a shop. You go in for one thing and forty minutes later you are still there, running your hand along a linen jacket you had not planned to buy, turning over a piece of pottery, wondering whether the light in your kitchen would suit it.
 
Rose and Lee is one of those. I should declare an interest. I buy most of my clothes there, most of my gifts, and now my treats too.
 
It starts with Fiona
Plenty of shops sell nice things. Very few are run by someone with an eye like Fiona's.
 
It shows most clearly in the flowers and the cloths. She combines colours and blooms in ways you simply do not see anywhere else, arrangements that look effortless and are anything but. There is a confidence to it. She is not following a trend or copying what is in the magazines. She just knows.
 
The same instinct runs through everything else. The vintage homeware, chosen individually, pieces with history that look as though they have always belonged in your house. The clothing, considered and wearable, a long way from the identikit rails you find on every high street in the country. None of it feels bought in. All of it feels chosen.
 

And then there is the welcome. Warm, unhurried, genuinely pleased to see you. You go in for a card and you come out an hour later having talked about everything except the card. That is not a technique. It is just who she is, and it is why people keep coming back.
 
Honestly, you do not want to leave.
 
And now, gelato
The gelato bar launched this month to queues out of the door. Families came. People brought their friends. The kind of opening day a small independent dreams about and rarely gets.
 
And there was free ice cream for the children. On the hottest day of the year, with a queue down the street, Fiona handed out scoops of Vanilla  to every child who chose it, and would not take a penny.
 
That tells you everything. Somebody else would have seen a queue and seen a till. She saw a street full of children in the heat and decided to make it a day they would remember.
